Moorehouse on the Columbia Plateau in the Style of Curtis

October 5, 2018 @ 8:00 am - February 3, 2019 @ 5:00 pm

The Wanapum Heritage Center has a small collection of photographs in the style of Edward S. Curtis taken by Lee Moorhouse of Pendleton, Oregon. He produced over 9,000 images documenting urban, rural, and Native American life on the Columbia Plateau from 1888 to 1916. Moorhouse’s photographs of the Cayuse, Walla Walla, and Umatilla are of particular significance for the region. Although his studio portraits were romanticized reflections of tribal people, his reservation photographs present an ethnographic record of Plateau clothing and dwellings. Photography is an important medium for recording families. The exhibit will include Wanapum portraits taken at Priest Rapids and other areas within their homeland.
