A minor has been charged with four counts of assault in the first degree with a deadly weapon enhancement following a stabbing at Foss High School in Tacoma on Thursday afternoon.
Five students — including the suspect — and a school security guard were injured during the attack. The suspect and victims were sent to Tacoma area hospitals for medical treatment. Two students underwent surgery to treat their injuries.
A probable cause declaration filed in Pierce County Superior Court stated multiple 911 calls were received on Thursday afternoon, reporting that students had been stabbed in the cafeteria and in a school hallway at Foss.
Judge Karen Ladenburg found probable cause existed, and set bail for the suspect at $750,000.
Shelbie Boyd, a public information officer with the Tacoma Police Department, said the violence stopped because of the quick response by school staff, who helped break up the fight.
“We are grateful for the quick, calm action of our staff and our first responders,” wrote Tanisha Jumper, chief communications officer for Tacoma Public Schools, in an emailed statement.
Classes and after-school activities were cancelled at Foss on Friday, but the school will reopen on Monday. Counselors and administrative staff will be on site to support staff and students, according to an announcement on Foss’ website.
Mental health resources for students and their families can be found on the district’s website.
