More Murrow News Stories On January 25th, Student Regent Jordan Frost voted against loaning the remaining 3.5 million dollars needs for the construction of a new 10 million dollar WSU baseball clubhouse. Frost stood alone in voting against the facility, believing there are other departments that need the funds more immediately.
“I know math is one of the departments that is really feeling a crunch right now in terms of supplies...not being able to order new supplies,” Frost said in an interview.
Frost believes the loan was pushed through because influential leaders on the WSU campus, including president Schulz, felt pressured to approve it.
“Athletics is loud, right, it’s visible. So when you go through a campus you can notice but you also notice sports. When you watch from afar you notice sports. President Schulz spends a lot of time with donors, donors care about sports,” Frost said.
Washington State Director of Athletics Pat Chun also discussed the new facility in a press release in response to the board passing the loan.
“Upgrading Bailey-Brayton Field was a necessity and provides Marty Lees and his staff the opportunity to attract top talent to Washington State, develop current talent, and return the program to a place of prominence.” - Pat Chun, WSU Athletic Director
We reached out to the WSU Board of Regents but have not yet received any comments from them.
Though the loan was passed, Frost continues to receive an outpouring of appreciation from students and staff on the WSU Pullman campus. Frost stands by his vote, believing it’s important to speak up for individuals on campus whose voices can go unheard.
