WSU fraternity member found dead

More Murrow News Stories PULLMAN – A WSU student died Tuesday morning, a sudden death police believe may be alcohol-related.

Pullman Police responded to Alpha Tau Omega fraternity at 710 NE Linden St. at 8:35am Tuesday. A 19-year-old male was unconscious and not breathing.

According to a news release from the Pullman Police Department, fraternity members performed CPR on the man until medics arrived. Medics declared him dead a short time later.

The initial investigation found that alcohol may have been involved in the cause of death, though the Whitman County Coroner will determine the official cause at a later date.

The Whitman County Sheriff’s Office and Office of the Dean of Students at WSU responded to offer student support and counseling.

Tuesday afternoon, WSU issued the following statement:

WSU counselors and Student Affairs staff have met with those most closely affected by this tragic loss. Other students in need of support should contact the Office of the Dean of Students or the Counseling and Psychological Services staff at Cougar Health Services

In response to this situation, all fraternities and sororities within the WSU Greek community have self-imposed an immediate suspension of all social events for the remainder of the semester. Washington State University will be working with the Pullman Police Department and the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity in the coming days to investigate the circumstances surrounding this death. Today, however, we are focused on supporting the student’s family and our University community.
