Covid keeps football families home

More Murrow News Stories PULLMAN, Wash. (Murrow News 8) – Kevin Bacon comes a from a rich line of Husky fandom. But he won’t tell you that. Once his son walked on to the Washington State football team, Kevin flipped crimson. “As far as allegiance and rooting for a school, that’s all it is.” Kevin said. “But rooting for family, I’m a number one fan and a die-hard Coug.” “He’s made every game,” Washington State outside receiver Lucas Bacon said. “All family. Grandparents, aunts and uncles - everyone.” A two-year scout team staple, Lucas turned a corner this spring. He recorded his second consecutive start Saturday against Oregon. But due to safety precautions amid the Covid-19 pandemic, Lucas’ number one fan couldn’t be there. The university has stopped all in-person attendance including family. And with all outside views blocked off into Martin Stadium, Lucas’ family has to watch from home like the rest of us. “To not be there is really tough,” Kevin said. "I’ve always had them there sitting in the same spot,” Lucas said. “But now you’re looking up at their cardboard cutouts and its pretty it’s pretty different.” Although, the Bacon’s almost didn’t have a game period. But the writing Lucas thought he saw on the wall read completely different. “Coming into spring ball I wasn’t really sure what was going to happen. Two years on scout team – I wasn’t really sure if it was for me,” Lucas said. “And then the staff changed and I really kinda found a new love.” Lucas recorded his first career catch in crimson threads Saturday – a touchdown - witnessed only by a sea of cardboard cutouts. “300 to 400 parents could be allowed into a stadium,” Kevin said. “I think they should be allowed in.” “You just got to take it for what it is. You know, I’ve been working my whole life for this. And once the ball is snapped, you gotta go.”
