Sound Transit light rail line in Federal Way to wrap up construction soon

The new Sound Transit light rail expansion that passengers will catch in Federal Way is now expected to open by the end of the year.  It will connect passengers from Lynnwood to Federal Way along the Interstate 5 corridor.

“ It's gonna provide people in King County with a lot more access to the regional transportation network; access to jobs around SeaTac airport, access to education and Highline College,” said David Jackson, a spokesperson for Sound Transit. “All the things that people need in the region. It gives them another option to get there.”

Sound Transit anticipates the new expansion will add about 35,000 new passengers to the service.

While the expansion was originally scheduled to open in 2024, the opening of the service was delayed by the pandemic, a concrete strike in Seattle and even problems with the soil.

“I think people have been driving by the project for some time wondering when it's gonna open,” Jackson said.

Now, Sound Transit anticipates that construction will be done by the end of August. Then, an opening date for the service will be announced.

Another expansion to Sound Transit service is expected to open in early 2026. It will expand the existing Two Line service on the east side, across the I-90 floating bridge into the city of Seattle.
