The primary purpose of our being there was to keep the Japanese from making one of the airstrips function. It’s now the largest landing strip in the Pacific. We were attacking this one hill and the platoon leader said, “Hey Bish, take your squad and take the lead and pass through." ... A guy from the Bronx of New York City said, “There’s a Jap!” “Well shoot the SOB.”
