Thank you, loyal viewers and donors

Northwest Public Broadcasting (NWPB) announced that KWSU-TV in Pullman will end operations on December 31, 2025. This decision is part of NWPB’s plan to realign its budget during financial challenges and after the federal government rescinded all public broadcasting funding — approximately $2 million annually previously granted to NWPB.

Since 1962, KWSU-TV has served the region as one of the first educational television stations in the Pacific Northwest. NWPB, Washington State University, and the Edward R. Murrow College of Communication made this decision with great care and deep appreciation for the station’s legacy.

Generous support from members, donors, and community partners since the federal funding cut allowed NWPB and WSU leadership to thoroughly evaluate the station’s financial needs and develop a sustainable path forward that protects essential public broadcasting services.

What This Means for Viewers

Continued Access to PBS Content

Even after KWSU-TV signs off, the Palouse, Lewiston-Clarkston and Spokane-area audiences will still be able to watch PBS programming through other regional stations, including Spokane Public Television and Idaho Public TV. Viewers can subscribe to NWPB's YouTube channel for the latest NWPB original productions.

Radio Services Continue Uninterrupted

NWPB’s radio network — which provides trusted news, information, and cultural programming across much of Washington and the Inland Northwest — will continue operating without interruption.

Answers to Common Questions

Why is KWSU-TV going off the air?

Budgetary challenges and the rescission of all federal funding created a significant financial gap for NWPB. Faced with the need to reduce operating costs by $1.8 million annually, NWPB will discontinue KWSU-TV and make other cost adjustments. This step is essential to stabilize the organization and ensure long-term service to the region.

When will the station stop broadcasting?

KWSU-TV will conclude operations on December 31, 2025. On-air notices will be broadcast throughout December 2025 to keep viewers informed.

Will I still receive my pledge thank-you gift?

Yes. If you recently donated to receive a thank-you gift, it will be delivered as promised. NWPB sincerely appreciates your support.

Is Passport still available?

Yes. PBS Passport remains active for donors giving $5/month or $60/year. Need help? Call: 1-800-842-8991, or email us at [email protected].

What is the future of NWPB’s other services?

NWPB’s radio network and KTNW-TV in the Tri-Cities will continue operating. As NWPB adapts to a future without federal funding, membership, underwriting, and community partnerships will be more important than ever in sustaining local public broadcasting.

For membership or programming questions, call 1-800-842-8991 and ask for Sarah McDaniel, Sarah English or Cara Williams Fry.

Thank You!

To all the viewers, donors, volunteers, and partners who made KWSU-TV a trusted part of life in the Palouse for more than six decades.
