The state law bans most abortions after 15 weeks. The lower courts blocked its enforcement, finding it in conflict with Roe v. Wade and subsequent abortion decisions.

In a statement Thursday, the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Mississippi said detainees were asked whether they had children and were provided with cellphones to arrange for their care.

The ICE raids are likely the largest operation since 2008 when 400 unauthorized workers were arrested in Iowa.

Curtis Flowers was tried six times for the same crime, and the court said it made its decision due to bias in jury selection. Now it's up to Mississippi whether to try him again.
