Lyndon holds a B.A. from The Edward R. Murrow College of Communication at Washington State University
In May 2011, I became a proud Washington State University alum with a bachelor’s degree from The Edward R. Murrow College of Communication. One of the most significant educational experiences I had at Murrow College was working at Northwest Public Radio (NWPB).
While at NWPB, I was presented with learning experiences that taught me to grow a thick skin, which included taking critical feedback and learning from it. I didn’t know it at the time, but the challenges that came with 4 AM shifts, audio editing, posting web article and formal vocal training all played a role in my career path.
Today, my official title is “Content Marketer” for a publicly-traded technology company located in downtown Seattle called Onvia. What this title really means is that I wear many hats and I must be a master of all things digital media and marketing. My time at NWPB taught me the skills I needed to be successful in this role. From the art of storytelling in multiple formats (writing, audio, video, web) to the underrated and challenging discipline of speaking clearly into a microphone to produce live webinars, my time at NWPB left an impact on my life that I can only begin to describe in just a short note.
In my view, the experience and training received at NWPB can benefit students in many ways. For example, public speaking is perhaps the most critical skill for success in almost any profession and is a skill I acquired at NWPB.
Being trusted with the task of “telling the news” to a broad population of the Northwest was not just a job for me. It was in many ways an honor and enormous responsibility that I learned to respect immensely. It provided me a sense of ownership and accountability that can only be earned with grit, hard work and determination. My employment at NWPB had a monumental benefit and it has served me well in my career.
