February 13 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pmFree

February’s selection is “Love Between the Covers: A Look at the Billion Dollar Romance Fiction Industry,” directed by Laurie Kahn. Romance fiction outsells all other genres of writing, from crime to science fiction, combined. So why is the genre so often dismissed as frivolous “scribble”? Could it be that it’s because the overwhelming majority of writers and readers are women? This funny and inspiring look into a billion dollar industry turns up trailblazers who push the discussion on gender, race, sexuality and diversity at the front lines of the biggest power shift in publishing. Official Selection at the Hot Docs Film Festival and at the Los Angeles Film Festival.
March’s selection is a group of short early films from women directors, including “Falling Leaves,” by Alice Guy Blanché, “Harlequin,” “Papageno,” and “The Stolen Heart,” by Lotte Reiniger, and “A Night On Bald Mountain,” by Claire Parker and Alexander Alexeieff. More women worked in film during its first two decades than at any time since. These films are all drawn from Kanopy’s “Early Women Filmakers” collection that highlights the work of 14 of early cinema’s most innovative and influential women directors, re-writing and celebrating their rightful place in film history.Join us in person in Crewspace at the library; admission is free; popcorn included!
