Birchwood Garden Club’s March 6th, 2024 Meeting
Topic: Mason Bees with Carrie Morlang from Knox Cellars Mason Bees
The March 6, 2024 meeting of the Birchwood Garden Club will be held in the Rotunda Room of the Old City Hall Museum, 121 Prospect St., Bellingham, WA 98225. Doors open at 6:30 PM. Our meeting begins at 7:00 PM.
The speaker for the evening will be Carrie Morlang from Knox Cellars Mason Bees. Orchard Mason Bees are one of the best pollinators for our area. Usually active from March to May or June, they are cavity nesting bees that do not make honey. They’re very gentle and non-aggressive. Since these bees are not tied to a hive, they are essentially “free agents.” If you offer the right environment, they reward you with lots of pollination. If you do not, they will happily fly off to somewhere that better meets their criteria.
Carrie’s talk will cover:
• Emergence from cocoons
• Male versus female bee behavior
• Nesting pattern
• Babies for next year and the loss of this year’s bees—an annual renewal
• Cocoon harvesting
• Winter storage

Birchwood Garden Club is offering a number of small grants to organizations in Whatcom or Skagit counties that promote education opportunities in the realm of horticulture, agricultural or related fields. Applications are being accepted now and will be awarded in January 2025.
