Book Launch: Kickass Healthy LADA by Jacqueline Haskins

April 13, 2023 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Free

The first book for the general public on LADA (Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults) aka Diabetes 1.5, Kickass Healthy Lada offers the most up to date information, with practical strategies and tips for healthy living.

Known to medical researchers since the 1980s, LADA – Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults – is just now beginning to be known to the general public. KICKASS HEALTHY LADA: How to Thrive with Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults is the first and only trade book on the market dedicated to helping the 3.4 million people diagnosed with LADA in the U.S. and, just as important, the millions who have been misdiagnosed or not diagnosed at all.

That was the author’s personal experience: Originally misdiagnosed, Haskins visited five doctors before getting helpful guidance. Lacking a supportive and authoritative guide—but armed with scientific training and 30 years of professional experience as a biologist—Haskins interviewed experts and scoured medical publications to weave together an understanding of LADA. She learned to take charge of her health and thrive with this chronic, life-threatening, yet conquerable disease. Though recent research underlines the dangers of LADA when not properly treated, as Haskins writes: “Well-controlled diabetes is the leading cause of… nothing.”

Thoroughly researched, empathetic, and practical, KICKASS HEALTHY LADA shares author Jacqueline Haskins’s hard-earned expertise. Medically vetted by Dr. Maury Hafermann, MD, this go-to guide provides critical information and insights, including:

– A detailed breakdown of the different diabetes diagnoses
– What makes LADA different and how to find the best treatment team
– Insulin: what it is, what it does, and how to know if we need more of this natural hormone
– Tools for good health with LADA, including food and nutrition advice
– Introducing Carb-Craft: how to safely enjoy the foods you love

Bringing compassion, humor, and hope from a patient’s point of view, Haskins builds a solid biology-based understanding, lays out clear strategies, and addresses the social and psychological aspects of living with LADA. It’s a toolkit designed to help readers feel good, be healthy, and eat delicious food. As Haskins writes: “Living with LADA doesn’t have to just be about survival. It can be joyful!”

Jacqueline Haskins received her Masters in Biostatistics from the University of Washington and her Masters in Creative Writing from Northwest Institute of Literary Arts. Her work appears in dozens of publications including The Iowa Review, River Teeth, Raven Chronicles and Terrain’s Letters to America series, and has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize. After 30 years as a field biologist, she now – to her wonder and delight – gets paid to hang out in a bookstore. She lives in the Cascade Mountains of WA state.

Dr. Maury Hafermann, MD, graduated summa cum laude from Dartmouth College, and obtained his medical doctorate from the University of Washington, graduating with honors and as a member of the AOA Honor Society. Dr. Hafermann has practiced as a family medicine specialist for over twenty years, and has an interest in auto-immune conditions such as LADA, and in medicinal nutrition. He lives in Leavenworth, WA.
