Learning from the South: The Black Experience and Reform in Republican China

April 22 @ 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm

Free

Melvin Barnes, Jr. (PhD, Ohio State) discusses the inspirational relationship between Black America and Modern China. For much of the 20th century, East Asian states occupied an important position within the African American imagination and political worldview. The Empire of Japan and, decades later, the People’s Republic of China served as foils to the government of the United States and as inspirational forces for African American communities. This Asia on the Palouse Speakers Series event, free and open to the public, will occur in the Clearwater Room in the Idaho Student Union Building, and is co-sponsored by the Black/African American Cultural Center, the Black Research Institute for Flourishing and Thriving, the Department of History, and the Habib Institute for Asian Studies.
