Messages of Peace

August 5, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm

Museum admission

As we approach the 78th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, join us at the REACH Museum on Saturday, August 5 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm (PDT) to reflect on the events that occurred in Japan in August 1945.

We will have luminaria bags available at this event for the public to write messages of peace on. We will use these bags with the messages of peace to light a path during the park’s Lights for Peace event on August 9 (more details at https://www.nps.gov/mapr/learn/days-of-peace-and-remembrance.htm). Visitors are encouraged to write messages of peace on the luminaria bags as a way to reflect on and remember these historical events.

On August 6, 1945, two-year old Sadako Sasaki was at home in Hiroshima, Japan when the United States dropped an atomic bomb on her city. After a diagnosis of leukemia, called atomic bomb disease by some in Hiroshima, Sadako was hospitalized. A Japanese legend says that folding 1,000 origami cranes grants the folder a wish, and Sadako set to work creating her cranes. Learn more about her story and fold your own origami crane at this event.

Museum admission tickets are required.
