A young black lesbian filmmaker probes into the life of The Watermelon Woman, a 1930s black actress who played ‘mammy’ archetypes. An auspicious debut for writer-director Cheryl Dunye, THE WATERMELON WOMAN tells a fresh story in wittily irreverent style.
