Red Barn Event- The 50 Peaks Project

This program is free and open to the public, offered jointly by the Wenatchee Valley Chapter of the Washington Native Plant Society and the Wenatchee River Institute. The presentation will be available in person at the Red Barn and will also be available virtually via Zoom.

Doors open at 6:30pm for a community social with beer and wine available for purchase. The presentation will start at 7:00pm.

The 50 Peaks Project – Documenting the diversity and distribution of alpine plants in Washington’s Cascade Range.

The 50 Peaks Project is a 5-year study initiated by David Giblin in 2021 to comprehensively survey vascular plants on 50 Cascade Range peaks between the Goat Rocks Wilderness and the Canadian Border. Project goals include improving knowledge of alpine species’ distributions, locating new populations of rare plant species, creating baseline data for future studies examining climate change impacts on alpine plant communities, and providing undergraduate students with field- and collections-based research experience.

David Giblin is Collections Manager and Research Botanist at the University of Washington Herbarium of the Burke Museum. David’s research focuses on the distribution and diversity of the Pacific Northwest vascular plant flora, for which he has conducted extensive field work throughout the region. He manages the Plants of Washington Image Gallery, Washington Flora Checklist, and Consortium of Pacific Northwest Herbaria online databases. He is lead editor and co-author for Flora of the Pacific Northwest, 2nd edition, co-author of wildflower guides to Mount Rainier and Olympic national parks, co-creator of the Washington Wildflowers identification app, and Taxon Editor of several families for the Flora of North America Project.
